Addressing Variability in Foundation Parameters for Soil Structure Interaction

Abstract
Addressing variability in foundation parameters for dynamic response of structures are normally performed with the code guidelines such as ASCE 4-98. For static analysis, consideration of soil stiffness variability is generally ignored. In this article, the difference in structural response for the variation in the static and dynamic soil spring stiffness has been brought out by the soil structure interaction analysis of a typical combined shear wall–framed concrete structure. It is concluded that the variability of the static foundation parameters would be affecting the structural response similar to the variation in the dynamic soil parameters. Generally the 0.5G case, being the most soft soil case, would be conservative and can be adopted for design of the structures.
