Abstract : Span unseating is the most common failure mechanism during seismic activities. Ground shaking and deformations during an earthquake can cause severe translation in the superstructure causing unseating in the supporting span. High levels of corrosion in bridge seats cause concrete to crack and spall, which results in decreasing the support length. This can result in a catastrophic collapse of the bridge span during an earthquake. This study proposes a practical, safe, and cost-effective solution for the rehabilitation of deteriorated bridge bents to avoid the unseating failure mechanism.
