Paper Title
A Case Study of Groundwater Quality in Industrial Area of Srinagar, J&K

Abstract
Abstract - Main source of drinking and daily use for domestic purposes is the groundwater, for both urban and rural areas. Surface and ground water are frequently polluted as a result of industrial and agricultural operations. Study of groundwater in Srinagar capital has been conducted to determine its appropriateness for home use. To know about the present quality of groundwater in industrial and non-industrial areas of Srinagar district of Jammu & Kashmir, the present study was conducted. Samples were collected from each site (two from each site) and various parameters including pH, total hardness, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, total alkalinity, chlorides, calcium, magnesium, BOD and turbidity were analysed and variation of groundwater quality is analysed by the related parameter. Water samples were collected from industrial and non-industrial areas of Srinagar through different sources which include hand-pumps, tube-wells and springs. The samples were collected and shifted to cleaned plastic bottles; each sample was then namedwith marker and brought to the laboratory for testing. Standard methods are used in the research for determining various parameters and results obtained were compared with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guideline values and Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated for each stations. The WQI in industrial area was found with the least value of 40.97 and highest WQI value was observed as 63.1. The computed WQI shows that water samples lie in ‘good to ‘poor’ category indicating that groundwater is not fit for direct consumption and treatment is required in the area. Similarly, the WQI in non-industrial area was found with the minimum value of 34.08 and the maximum value of 48.16. The computed WQI shows that water samples fall in ‘good’ category and is thus fit for domestic purposes. Keywords - Industrial Area, Groundwater Quality
