Abstract : The disposal of waste sludge from the refineries is a problem faced by many petrochemical industries. This paper
presents a solution to this problem by reuse of this sludge as a fine aggregate in concrete. Experimental characterization of
the sludge was done to establish the choice of petrochemical sludge as a material replacement for fine aggregate- river sand.
Compressive tests were carried out for various predetermined test mixes for different two grades M20 and M25 grades for
optimization of percentage of sludge to be used in concrete. Based on the experimental study, it can be concluded that the
reuse of petrochemical sludge is feasible in grades of concrete M20 and M25 upto 25 and 20 % respectively. The strength
attained on replacement of 25% and 20% was 27.85 N/mm2 and 32 N/mm2 respectively. The density of concrete decreased
by 10% when replaced by 25% and 20% of sludge in both the cases. This decrease in density makes it a lightweight
concrete. Durability tests on concrete showed that the replacement option were feasible in various other conditions also. The
concrete was subjected to various tests for alkalinity, hardness and total solids in the curing water. The decrease in density
of concrete led to the increase in porosity of concrete which leads to the discharge of particles into curing water. Hence an
increase in alkalinity, hardness and TDS values with increase in % replacement was observed.
Key Words- Fine aggregate, Concrete, Petrochemical Sludge.
