Abstract : The convergence behavior of the Edge-based Smoothed Finite Element Method (ES-FEM) with a triangular Discrete Shear Gap (DSG3) element in analyzing the Functionally Graded Material (FGM) plates will be studied in this paper. FGM consists of at least two materials whose volume fractions continuously change along with the thickness of the material. ES-FEM will be applied to the DSG3 element to enhance its accuracy, in analyzing displacement in this case. ESDSG3 will be formulated and demonstrated on the square FGM plate static problem to show the convergence behavior. Two additional degrees of freedom on each node is introduced as a consequence of the membrane-bending coupling effect of FGM. The constant strain matrix along the element makes the computational process running relatively faster than other elements. Keywords - Discrete Shear Gap (DSG), Edge-based Smoothed FEM, Finite Element Method (FEM), Functionally Graded Material (FGM)
